” I use photos as references for my drawings but I am not after a perfect reproduction at all. I use a photo very loosely once the proportions are established. I usually work as if I were drawing from a live model actually. I work with movement and expression, working fast on larger, more unimportant areas, and slowing down on parts that need more attention. I am actually improvising a lot. My main concern is to capture the essence and substance of forms in order to get close to a perceptible presence of the subject. ” – Dirk Dzimirsky

First your drawings are beautiful. I have a few questions about your process in developing these beautiful charcoal drawings.
1. Do you use a fixative between each step…and if you do what do you use as a fixative?
2. What kind of canvas do you work on…and is your canvas stretched on stretcher strips like a painting would be?
3. What brand and types of charcoal do you use?
Thanks for your time and again your work is beautiful. On my website I have some drawings from my college days. I mostly paint but I was a drawing major and if I could draw figures 25% as good as you I would be happy and only draw figures…I love to draw but it’s hard to find models where I live.
Sincerely yours,
